Hugging her soon-to-be-born sibling

July 4, 2009

Diana BarnardDiana Barnard sent this lovely picture of her 2-year-old daughter breastfeeding while Diana is 33 weeks pregnant. I like the way the girl’s hand is on Diana’s abdomen, as if she is hugging the baby.

‘Not ready to give up’

June 22, 2009

Tracy BrooksI borrowed a phrase from Tracy Brooks’ comment under this picture in Facebook for the title.  Elsewhere on the page, she added that neither she nor Julian was ready to give up breastfeeding. He was 16 months old when the picture was made. I’m always glad to see pictures of toddlers nursing. It’s great for that special bond between mother and child to extend further.

With help from sister …

Amelia ClarkeThis picture looks like a posed portrait, but Amelia Clarke wrote in Facebook, “This is how i fed for months. The best times in my life!” I love the way the older daughter holds the younger one’s head as she nurses.

A beauty at the breast

louiise-miller-reducedLouise Wheeler’s daughter feeds contentedly at her mom’s breast. Louise wrote that for her daughter, who was 3 years old when this picture was taken, nursing was “her favourite way to chill out and have some bonding time with me after the birth of her sister.”

Look at the camera

April 22, 2009

n628090890_2399255_8085It’s not unusual to see a breasfeeding mom look at the camera when a picture is taken. Here Dani Arnold’s son seems intrigued by the photography process, too — but not enough to relax his efforts in gaining nourishment from her breast.

Eyes locked on mom’s face

tammy-mcinnis-maguire-duperronTammy McInnis Maguire-Duperron nurses daughter Iza on her second birthday. I love the rapt attention in Iza’s eyes as she feeds from Tammy’s breast! Tammy, who currently nurses her 2-year-old and 4-month-old children, said she continued to feed Iza until she self-weaned at 43 months.

Stunt nursing?

February 27, 2009

acrobaticHelen Schwalme’s toddler son uses an unorthodox pose to take his nourishment from her breast in this picture. She deserves credit for the “stunt nursing” term that I used in the title. It’s great when the natural process of breastfeeding is also fun for the mother and child.
